The NECO timetable: where to find it and how to read it

Skolra is not part of NECO. Confirm on NECO's official site: neco.gov.ng.

In short

  • NECO has not released its 2027 SSCE timetable yet. The Federal Government has proposed 1 April to 14 May 2027 for the NECO SSCE, in a statement of 14 October 2026.
  • In 2026 the SSCE Internal, the school exam, was written from 15 June to 23 July. Results came out on 24 September 2026.
  • Get the timetable from NECO's own website, neco.gov.ng, or from your school.
  • Writing NECO as a private candidate? See the NECO GCE dates.

NECO's exams and when they hold

The National Examinations Council (NECO) runs several exams. Each has its own timetable.

SSCE Internal (school candidates)Usually June and July. In 2026: 15 June to 23 July, with some practicals and orals in the first week. Results came out on 24 September 2026. For 2027, 1 April to 14 May has been proposed (see below).
SSCE External (NECO GCE, private candidates)Once a year, late in the year. For this year's dates, subjects and fee, see NECO GCE.
BECE (end of JSS3)In 2026: 20 to 30 April.
NCEE (entrance to Federal Unity Colleges)In 2026: Saturday 6 June.

These are past dates to show the pattern. They are not the dates for your exam. Always use the official timetable for your exam and year.

NECO 2027: the proposed dates

On 14 October 2026 the Federal Ministry of Education proposed new dates for the 2027 exams. The aim is to release results by August 2027, so that admission can start in September.

NECO SSCE1 April to 14 May 2027 (proposed). Results in August 2027.
WAEC WASSCE11 May to 18 June 2027 (proposed). Results in August 2027.

NECO has not confirmed these dates or released a 2027 timetable (checked 23 October 2026). If the proposal holds, the NECO school exam starts about two and a half months earlier than in 2026, and NECO and WAEC papers overlap from 11 to 14 May. If you are in SS3, plan to be ready by the end of March 2027, and watch for NECO's own timetable.

Internal or External: which one is yours?

If you are in SS3 and your school registers you, you write the SSCE Internal. Your school handles the registration, and you follow the Internal timetable.

If you have left school, or you want to write again to improve a result, you register yourself for the SSCE External, often called NECO GCE. It has its own timetable, at a different time of year.

Many students write both WAEC and NECO in the same year. That is fine, but it means two timetables to follow, sometimes in the same weeks.

Where to get the timetable from NECO

  1. Go to neco.gov.ng. NECO posts each timetable there as a PDF.
  2. Check NECO's official X account for the announcement.
  3. Ask your school. Schools get the timetable for their candidates.
  4. Private candidates get the NECO GCE timetable when they register, from the cybercafé.

Many blogs post "NECO timetable" pages, and some carry wrong dates. In 2026, some blogs gave the wrong start date for the SSCE Internal. If a date does not match what NECO or your school says, trust NECO.

How to read the timetable

The timetable is a table with five columns. Here is one real line from NECO's 2026 SSCE Internal timetable:

DateWednesday 1st July
Paper code1023
Paper title and subjectPaper III: Objective - General Mathematics
Duration1 hr 45 mins
Time10:00 am – 11:45 am
  • The paper numbers. In NECO's timetables, Paper III is the objective paper, Paper II is the essay, and Paper I is the practical. Some subjects also have a Paper IV, such as the English test of orals or the Literature prose paper.
  • Two papers in one line. A line such as "Papers III & II: Objective & Essay" means both papers are written in one sitting, in the time shown.
  • The first week. Practicals, orals and performance tests often come first, sometimes with dates and times that NECO fixes later. Ask your school for yours.
  • The time. Each line gives the start and end time. Many days have a morning paper and an afternoon paper.

The notes at the bottom

Read the notes at the end of the timetable. In 2026 they said:

  • Every candidate must have a photocard.
  • If the time on the question paper is different from the time on the timetable, follow the question paper.
  • Candidates with albinism and blind candidates get 30 extra minutes at the end of each subject.
  • A scientific calculator is allowed. Programmable calculators, phones, iPads, tablets, smart watches, smart glasses and smart pens are not.
  • Candidates who do not sit a practical (Paper I) get no result in that subject.

How to use it to plan

  1. Mark only your own subjects, with every paper for each.
  2. List the date and time of each paper, in order, and put the list where you see it every day.
  3. Mark days with two papers, and the days your practicals hold.
  4. Plan your revision backwards from each paper. Start with the subjects that come first.
  5. Check NECO's website and ask your school again a week before the exam starts, in case a paper moves.

Writing NECO on computer

NECO is moving its exams to computer. It ran the 2026 SSCE Internal in "dual mode": some candidates wrote on computer and others on paper, and NECO told each school which mode it would use. Your school will tell you if you are writing any paper on computer. Read what changes with computer-based WAEC exams. The same advice helps for NECO.

Common problems

  • The timetable on WhatsApp is different from your school's. Ask your school which one came from NECO.
  • You cannot open NECO's website. Try again later, or check NECO's official X account. Your school will still have the timetable.
  • Your practical date is not clear. Ask your subject teacher or exam officer.
  • You are also writing WAEC. Put both timetables side by side early, and mark any day with papers from both. See the WAEC timetable guide.
