If the time on your question paper is different from the timetable, follow the question paper. Print NECO's own copy of the timetable from neco.gov.ng or from the cybercafé where you register. If another copy shows different dates, trust NECO's.

How to register for NECO GCE

  1. Go to ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng. Create an account with your email or phone number, and activate it.
  2. Pay for your registration.
  3. Fill in your details and choose your subjects. You need a valid NIN, and a passport photo with a white background that is not more than six months old.
  4. Go to a good cybercafé to have your fingerprints taken and to finish. Check every detail the cybercafé enters before they upload it: NECO says it is not responsible for registration mistakes.
  5. Get your timetable and at least one clear copy of your photocard from the cybercafé.
  6. Choose your exam "neighbourhood" in your state with care. It cannot be changed after upload.
  7. Reprint your photocard at least two weeks before the exam to see your exact centre.

Register only once. NECO cancels all the results of a candidate who registers more than once. Your photo and your NIN are printed on your certificate, so make sure both are right.

The photocard and the referee

You need your photocard to enter the computer centre or the exam hall. NECO will not accept a photocard with an unclear photo. The referee part of the photocard must be signed and stamped by one of these:

  • the principal of a recognised secondary school
  • an ordained clergyman or a Chief Imam
  • an officer of the Nigerian Armed Forces or the Police, at the rank of Captain or its equal, or higher
  • a senior civil servant on grade level 14 or higher
  • a lawyer with at least ten years of experience

You no longer take your photocard to a NECO state office for stamping.

If you made a mistake when you registered

NECO allows one correction after upload, before the exam starts. You can correct your name or your passport photo, but not both, along with other details. A complete change of name is not allowed, and neither is a change of exam neighbourhood.

Is NECO GCE written on computer?

Partly. NECO's guideline says the 2026 exam is "dual mode": a computer-based exam (CBE) and a pen-and-paper exam (PPE). NECO's timetable speaks of a "virtual question paper", the questions on your screen.

Get ready for both. Practise answering objective questions on a screen, against a timer, and keep practising essay answers by hand. If you write on computer, you log in with your exam number, so keep it safe. NECO also says it will hold a mock exam for candidates who want one, and will announce it before the exam. Watch neco.gov.ng for it.

The 16 subjects, and past questions for each

NECO GCE 2026 has only 16 subjects, so check that yours are on the list before you pay. NECO and WAEC papers are both set on the senior secondary school syllabus, so WAEC past questions are good practice for NECO GCE too.

Each of these pages shows ten past questions with answers and explanations. The Skolra app has over 13,000 WAEC and over 1,300 NECO past questions to practise on a timed screen.

On the exam day

  • Take your photocard. Every candidate must have one.
  • Be seated 30 minutes before each paper. No one is let into the centre after the paper starts.
  • Wear your own clothes, not a school uniform. NECO asks external candidates to dress in mufti.
  • A scientific calculator is allowed. Programmable calculators, phones, iPads, tablets, smart watches, smart glasses and smart pens are not. Smoking and weapons are not allowed either.
  • NECO checks your face and fingerprints during the exam. If they do not match your registration, NECO treats you as an impersonator.
  • Candidates with albinism and blind candidates get 30 minutes extra on every paper.

When will the NECO GCE 2026 results come out?

NECO has not announced a date yet (checked 23 October 2026). The NECO GCE 2025 results came out on 3 February 2026. Check your result only on NECO's result site, results.neco.gov.ng, with your registration number and a result token.

Questions students ask about NECO GCE

Is NECO GCE the same as NECO SSCE?

NECO GCE is the name most people use for NECO's SSCE External, the exam for private candidates who are not in school. SS3 students write the SSCE Internal with their school. Both are NECO's Senior School Certificate Examination.

Can I still register for NECO GCE 2026?

Yes, but the price goes up as the exam gets closer. Normal registration is up to 26 October 2026, and late registration, with ₦5,000 extra, from 27 October to 3 November. After that, NECO allows walk-in registration for ₦43,000, done at least three hours before the paper you want to write.

How is NECO GCE different from WAEC GCE?

Both are for private candidates. NECO holds its external exam once a year, late in the year. WAEC holds its exam for private candidates twice a year, in two series. See the WAEC GCE dates.

Can I combine a NECO GCE result with WAEC?

NECO says a NECO result can be combined with another result, such as WAEC, for admission. But each school and course sets its own rule, and some courses want all your credits from one sitting. Check the rules of the school you want.

Can anyone sell me the NECO GCE questions before the exam?

No. People who sell "questions" before the exam are scammers. Buying or selling exam papers is a crime in Nigeria, even when the paper is fake. Spend the money and time on real practice instead.
