1.Which of the following feed ingredients is required most in formulating ration of layers?
- ABone meal
- BMaizeCorrect
- CFish meal
- DVitamin-mineral premix
Show answerHide answer
Answer: B
Maize is correct. When a ration is formulated, ingredients are combined in different proportions depending on the nutrient they supply and how much of that nutrient the bird needs in bulk.
So although calcium is critical for layers specifically, the question is about which ingredient is needed in the greatest quantity in the ration - and that is the energy source, maize.

5.Cellulose is broken down in the rumen mainly with the help of _____
- AMicro-organisms (bacteria and protozoa) living in the rumenCorrect
- BSalivary amylase produced in the mouth
- CPepsin enzyme secreted by the stomach wall
- DHydrochloric acid secreted by the abomasum
Show answerHide answer
Answer: A
Ruminant animals such as cattle, sheep and goats do not themselves produce cellulase, the enzyme needed to break down cellulose, the tough fibrous carbohydrate in plant cell walls. Instead, the rumen (the first and largest chamber of the ruminant stomach) houses a huge population of micro-organisms — bacteria and protozoa — living in a symbiotic relationship with the animal. These micro-organisms produce cellulase and other enzymes that ferment cellulose into volatile fatty acids, which the animal absorbs and uses as its main source of energy.

6.Anaemia in farm animals is caused by
- ADeficiency of calcium and phosphorus in the diet
- BDeficiency of vitamin A in the diet
- CBlood-sucking parasites such as ticks, lice and mitesCorrect
- DExcess carbohydrate in the ration
Show answerHide answer
Answer: C
Anaemia is a condition in which an animal's blood has too few red blood cells or too little haemoglobin, so the blood cannot carry enough oxygen round the body. The animal becomes weak, pale (check the gums and inner eyelids) and tires easily.
So the correct cause of anaemia here is the blood-sucking parasites, because they remove blood directly from the animal's body.

7.Which of the following disease would directly affect milk production in cows
- AFoot-and-mouth disease
- BTrypanosomiasis
- CMastitisCorrect
- DBrucellosis
Show answerHide answer
Answer: C
Mastitis is correct. Mastitis is an inflammation of the udder (mammary gland), usually caused by bacteria entering through the teat canal. Because it attacks the milk-producing tissue of the udder directly, it reduces milk yield, changes the milk's colour and consistency (clots, blood-tinged or watery milk), and can make the milk unfit for sale or consumption. This is why mastitis is the disease most directly linked to milk production in dairy cows.

10.Which of the following plants is not a forage legume?
- AStylosanthes guianensis
- BCentrosema pubescens
- CPanicum maximumCorrect
- DCalopogonium mucunoides
Show answerHide answer
Answer: C
Panicum maximum (Guinea grass) is the odd one out. It belongs to the grass family (Poaceae), not the legume family (Fabaceae/Leguminosae), so it is not a forage legume — it is a forage grass.
The other three are all well-known tropical forage legumes used for pasture improvement and as cover crops in Nigeria:
Centrosema pubescens (centro), Stylosanthes guianensis (stylo), and Calopogonium mucunoides (calopo) are all creeping or climbing legumes that form root nodules with Rhizobium bacteria, fixing atmospheric nitrogen and enriching the soil while also providing protein-rich fodder for livestock.
