Augustine University VC urges review of university regulations

According to reports, Rev. Father Professor Anthony Alaba Akinwale, the Vice-Chancellor of Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, Lagos State, called for changes to the regulatory framework governing Nigerian universities. We have not yet seen an official notice.
He made the remarks on Tuesday during a press conference ahead of the university's 8th Convocation scheduled for Thursday, 29 October 2026. Rev. Father Professor Anthony Alaba Akinwale, Vice-Chancellor of Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, said Nigeria must build more universities to widen access for qualified applicants who cannot get admission.
He explained that universities must work within admission limits set by the National Universities Commission, and that some schools admit fewer students than those limits to maintain quality. He questioned the practice of establishing universities as constituency projects by legislators.
He urged an urgent review of the regulatory framework, especially the introduction and updating of academic programmes. He warned that too much centralisation and slow approval processes could hinder institutions from reacting swiftly to new developments.
Who it affects
Students and prospective applicants may benefit from a more responsive university system.
