NCCE unveils new curriculum and five-year plan for teacher education

The National Commission for Colleges of Education said on Tuesday, 27 October 2026 that it has launched a fresh curriculum together with a five-year strategic plan to boost teacher education. The plan intends for colleges of education to grant degrees in addition to the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). The reforms seek to reposition colleges of education so they produce skilled teachers with contemporary teaching abilities, digital knowledge and hands-on experience.
The new curriculum includes digital skills, inclusive education, entrepreneurship and creative teaching methods. The curriculum was created following consultations with scholars, curriculum experts, professional organisations and regulatory bodies. NCCE Executive Secretary Dr Angela Ajala announced the initiative at a national retreat and workshop in Abuja.
Dr Ajala stated that the dual mandate offers an opportunity to enhance teacher preparation, expand academic pathways, and uplift professional training standards in colleges of education. She warned that a new curriculum would not automatically lead to better educational outcomes without the required institutional support. She said that well-trained lecturers, modern facilities, effective quality-assurance systems and proper funding are essential for successful implementation.
Who it affects
The reforms affect colleges of education, their provosts, administrators, lecturers and students pursuing teacher training.
