OAU post-UTME past questions

Ten questions from our OAU post-UTME bank, with answers and explanations.

  1. 1.The major sedimentary minerals found in Nigeria include:
    1. A
      Coal, limestone and petroleum
      Correct
    2. B
      Gold and iron ore
    3. C
      Tin and columbite
    4. D
      Marble and granite
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

Nigeria's major sedimentary minerals — coal, limestone and petroleum — occur in sedimentary basins such as the Niger Delta and the Benue Trough, unlike tin and columbite which are associated with the crystalline basement complex.

  2. 2.Which of the following is not a prominent process of wind erosion in the desert?
    1. A
      Deflation
    2. B
      Hydraulic action
      Correct
    3. C
      Abrasion
    4. D
      Attrition
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

Hydraulic action is the sheer force of moving water wearing away material, a process associated with rivers and waves, not wind. Deflation, abrasion, and attrition are the recognized processes of wind erosion in deserts.

  3. 3.Drought-tolerant plants are
    1. A
      Xerophytes
      Correct
    2. B
      Hydrophytes
    3. C
      Mesophytes
    4. D
      Halophytes
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

Plants adapted to survive with very little water, such as thick cuticles and reduced leaves, are called xerophytes.

  4. 4.

    Evaluate the integral ∫12(x2+1x)dx\int _1^2\left(x^2+\frac 1 x\right)\mathit{dx}

    1. A
      7/3 + ln 2
      Correct
    2. B
      8/3 + ln 2
    3. C
      7/3 + (ln 2)/2
    4. D
      7/3 − ln 2
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

    ∫(x² + 1/x) dx = x³/3 + ln x. Evaluate from 1 to 2:

    [8/3 + ln2] − [1/3 + ln1] = 8/3 − 1/3 + ln2 = 7/3 + ln 2.

The option with 8/3 forgets to subtract the lower-limit 1/3; the option with a minus sign gets the sign of ln2 wrong; the option halving ln2 mishandles ln1=0.

  5. 5.Commerce means
    1. A
The storage of goods in warehouses only
    2. B
      The manufacturing of raw materials
    3. C
      The production of goods only
    4. D
The activities involved in the distribution and exchange of goods and services
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

  6. 6.Which of the following does not lead to the dissolution of a partnership?
    1. A
      Death of a partner
    2. B
Transfer of a partner's interest to another person with the consent of other partners
      Correct
    3. C
      Bankruptcy of a partner
    4. D
A court order dissolving the firm
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

Unlike death, bankruptcy or a court order, a consented transfer of a partner's share does not by itself dissolve the partnership.

  7. 7.The latitude which marks the limits of is overhead sun's apparent movement is
    1. A
      The Poles (90°)
    2. B
The Arctic and Antarctic Circles (66½°)
    3. C
      The Tropics (23½°N and 23½°S)
      Correct
    4. D
      The Equator (0°)
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

The overhead sun appears to migrate only between the Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23½°S), the latitudinal limits set by the tilt of the earth's axis.

  8. 8.For what values of xx is x−1<−1x^{-1} < - 1?
    1. A
      x < 0
    2. B
      x > 0
    3. C
      -1 < x < 0
      Correct
    4. D
      x < -1
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

    x⁻¹ < -1 means 1/x < -1. This holds only when x is negative and between -1 and 0, since e.g. x = -0.5 gives 1/x = -2 < -1, but x = -2 gives 1/x = -0.5, which fails.
    The solution is -1 < x < 0.

  9. 9.Choose from the options A - D the word opposite in meaning to the underlined word. The criminal's answers to the questions during interrogation were evasive (underlined)
    1. A
      cunning

    3. C
      deceptive
    4. D
      direct
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

"Evasive" means avoiding straightforward answers; its opposite is direct.

  10. 10.Wilson Company owns land which cost 14,100,000. If a "quick sate" of the land was necessary to generate cash, the company feels it would receive only ₦80,000. The company continues to report the asset on the balance sheet at ₦100,000 This is justified under which of the following concepts?
    1. A
      Prudence (conservatism) concept
    2. B
      Matching concept
    3. C
      Going concern concept
    4. D
      Historical cost concept
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

Under the historical cost concept, assets are recorded and continue to be reported at their original purchase price, not at their current market or forced-sale value. This is why the land stays on the books at cost even though a quick sale would fetch less.
