JAMB subject combination for Software Engineering

Checked against JAMB's brochure on 9 October 2026. Faculty in the brochure: Sciences.

Good to know: Most schools list Software Engineering under Computer Science in the JAMB brochure, so that rule is shown. A smaller engineering row asks for Mathematics, Economics and one of Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Geography.

UTME subjects and WAEC (O'level) requirements for Software Engineering

You write four subjects in the UTME. Use of English is compulsory for every course.

  1. 1Use of English
  2. 2Mathematics
  3. 3Physics
  4. 4One of Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Economics or Geography

In plain words: Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and one of Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Economics or Geography.

Mathematics, Physics and one (1) of Biology, Chemistry, Agric Science, Economics and Geography.

WAEC or NECO (O'level): Five credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics and two other Science subjects. More on O'level below.

O'level requirements

Five credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics and two other Science subjects.

Five (5) SSC credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Physics plus two (2) other Science subjects.

Rules for every course at these schools

  • Federal University of Technology, Akure: All programmes need at least a credit pass in English Language and Mathematics.
  • Federal University of Technology, Owerri: Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Chemistry are mandatory, in addition to the departments' other credit passes.

Direct Entry

As Computer Science: two 'A' Level passes in science subjects including Mathematics, or NCE merit in Mathematics and one other Science or Social Science subject.

JAMB past questions for Software Engineering students

Practise the UTME subjects for Software Engineering. Each page has ten questions with answers and explanations; the rest are in the app.

What JAMB score do you need for Software Engineering?

The answer depends on the school, and on what its list measures. From the schools' own 2026/2027 lists:

  • UTME score (out of 400): the Software Engineering mark we hold runs from 170 at FUTO to 200 at BUK, ESUT, FUNAAB and UNIJOS.
  • Aggregate worked out by the school: the mark runs from 59.25 at UNILAG to 75.375 at UI. Each school works out its aggregate in its own way, so compare a school only with itself.

JAMB's lowest mark for any university is 150, and a course can ask for more than the school's general mark. See the Software Engineering cut-off mark at each of the 10 universities.

How big schools differ

JAMB's live brochure lists 164 degree-awarding institutions for this course.

Offered at big schools including: University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Benin, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, University of Calabar, University of Jos, University of Uyo, Bayero University Kano, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Osun State University, Babcock University.

Software Engineering at UNIZIK

  • UTME subjects: JAMB's live brochure lists: English Language, Mathematics, Physics and one science subject including Economics and Geography

Software Engineering at FUTO

  • UTME subjects: JAMB's live brochure lists: Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics

Software Engineering at FUTMINNA

  • UTME subjects: JAMB's live brochure lists: English Language, General Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry or Biology

Software Engineering at FUNAAB

  • UTME subjects: JAMB's live brochure lists: Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Software Engineering at Babcock University

  • UTME subjects: JAMB's live brochure lists: Babcock will accept any three of Mathematics, Economics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geography and Technical Drawing.

Other schools have their own rules too. Requirements differ between schools and can change each year. Before you register, check your chosen school's entry in the official JAMB brochure on ibass.jamb.gov.ng (Brochure, then View by institution) and the school's own admission notice.
