Ten JAMB 2015 questions with answers

  1. From the Use of English paper

    1.

    Select the wrongly spelt words.

    1. A
      Occurrence
    2. B
      Neccessary
      Correct
    3. C
      Embarrass
    4. D
      Accommodate
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

Neccessary is the wrongly spelt word. The correct spelling is necessary — one c and two s's. A useful way to remember it: "It is necessary for a shirt to have one collar and two sleeves" (one c, two s).

The other three words are all spelt correctly as given:

Occurrence — correctly doubles both the r and the final consonant before the suffix (occur + r + ence).
    Embarrass — correctly has a double r and a double s.
    Accommodate — correctly has a double c and a double m.

  2. From the Mathematics paper

2.A pipe made of metal 10cm thick has an external radius of 11cm. find the area of metal in making 2.4cm of pipe
    1. A
      905.1cm³
      Correct
    2. B
      377.0cm²
    3. C
      1810.3cm³
    4. D
      452.6cm³
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

    The pipe wall is a ring (annulus): external radius R = 11cm, and since the metal is 10cm thick, internal radius r = 11 − 10 = 1cm.

    Cross-sectional area of the ring = π(R² − r²) = (22/7)(11² − 1²) = (22/7)(121 − 1) = (22/7)(120) = 2640/7 ≈ 377.14cm².

    Volume of metal in a 2.4cm length of pipe = cross-sectional area × length = 377.14 × 2.4 ≈ 905.1cm³.

Stopping at the cross-sectional area and forgetting to multiply by the 2.4cm length gives the wrong 377.0cm² (also missing that this should be a volume, not an area). Doubling the length by mistake gives roughly 1810.3cm³, and halving the correct volume gives 452.6cm³.

  3. From the Physics paper

3.A platinum resistance thermometer wire has a resistance of 70hms at 0°Cand 7.5 Ohms at 100°C. Calculate the temperature of the wire when the resistance is 7.2 Ohms
    1. A
      60°C
    2. B
      40°C
      Correct
    3. C
      80°C
    4. D
      20°C
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

    Using the linear interpolation formula for a resistance thermometer: T = [(RT − R0) ÷ (R100 − R0)] × 100. Substituting R0 = 7 Ω, R100 = 7.5 Ω, and RT = 7.2 Ω gives T = [(7.2 − 7) ÷ (7.5 − 7)] × 100 = (0.2 ÷ 0.5) × 100 = 40°C.

  4. From the Chemistry paper

    4.Atomicity of ozone is
    1. A
      4
    2. B
      3
      Correct
    3. C
      1
    4. D
      2
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

Atomicity is the number of atoms present in one molecule of a substance. Ozone has the molecular formula O3, meaning each molecule contains three oxygen atoms. Its atomicity is therefore 3, distinguishing it from ordinary oxygen (O2, atomicity 2).

  5. From the Principles of Accounts paper

5.Preliminary expenses is an example of
    1. A
      Current assets
    2. B
      Fictitious assets
      Correct
    3. C
      Wasting assets
    4. D
      Intangible assets
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

Fictitious assets is the correct classification.

Preliminary expenses are the costs of bringing a limited liability company into existence — CAC registration and filing fees, stamp duties, legal and professional charges, and the cost of drafting and printing the memorandum, articles and prospectus. They are spent once, before the company even begins to trade.

  6. From the Agricultural Science paper

6.Which of the following diseases commonly occur during brooding? I. yolk sac infection II. coccidiosis III. fowlpox IV. pullorum
    1. A
      II, III and IV only
    2. B
All of I, II, III and IV
    3. C
      I, II and III only
    4. D
      I, II and IV only
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

Diseases that commonly occur during brooding include yolk sac infection (I), coccidiosis (II), and pullorum (IV). Fowlpox (III) is not typically a brooding disease as it usually appears in older birds.

  7. From the Use of English paper

    7.

Choose the option that best fills the gap.

They _____ our donation with thanks.

    1. A
      appreciated
    2. B
      acknowledged
      Correct
    3. C
      accepted
    4. D
      recognized
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

The correct word is acknowledged. In standard English, when someone confirms receipt of a gift, letter or donation and expresses gratitude for it, the fixed collocation is "to acknowledge (something) with thanks." So the sentence reads: "They acknowledged our donation with thanks."

  8. From the Mathematics paper

8.If duty is levied at 25%, find the duty to be added to a bill of ₦80.
    1. A
      ₦20
      Correct
    2. B
      ₦25
    3. C
      ₦80
    4. D
      ₦16
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

Duty is calculated as a percentage of the bill: 25% of ₦80.

    Duty = 25/100 × 80 = ₦20.

Confusing the duty rate with a different percentage, such as taking 25% of 100 instead of 80, gives the unrelated ₦25. Using 1/5 instead of 1/4 of the bill gives ₦16. Simply repeating the original bill amount, forgetting to take the percentage at all, gives ₦80.

  9. From the Physics paper

    9.

In an inelastic collisionI. Energy is conversed

    II. Energy is decreased

    III. Energy is increased

    IV. Linear momentum conversed

    1. A
      I and IV only
    2. B
      I and II only
    3. C
      II and IV only
      Correct
    4. D
      III and IV only
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

In an inelastic collision, linear momentum is always conserved (Newton's third law ensures no net external impulse). However, kinetic energy is not conserved; some is converted into heat, sound, or deformation energy, so the total kinetic energy after the collision is less than before — it decreases. Energy is never created in such a collision, so statement III is false, and total energy is not conserved in the kinetic sense, making statement I false.

  10. From the Chemistry paper

10.5 block elements of the periodic table one made up of
    1. A
      halogens and noble gases
    2. B
      lanthanides and actinides
    3. C
      transition metals
    4. D
alkali metals and alkaline earth metals
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

The s-block of the periodic table consists of elements in Groups 1 and 2, whose outermost electrons occupy s orbitals. Group 1 elements are the alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) and Group 2 elements are the alkaline earth metals (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra). Hydrogen and helium are also members of the s-block.
