Ten JAMB 2022 questions with answers

  1. From the Use of English paper

    1.

In each of the following sentences, the word that receives the emphatic stress is written in capital letters . From the options lettered A to D, choose the one which the sentence is the appropriate answer.

Aderonke STATED she had a right to her privacy.

    1. A
Did Aderonke state she had a right to her privacy?
    2. B
Who stated she had a right to privacy?
    3. C
      What did Aderonke do?
      Correct
    4. D
Did someone claim to have privacy?
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

When 'STATED' receives emphatic stress in 'Aderonke STATED she had a right to her privacy', the emphasis is on the action she took. The question this answers is 'What did Aderonke do?' - emphasizing the action of stating rather than who did it.

    2.

Given that r =3vπh\sqrt\frac{3v}{\pi h}, make v the subject of the formula

    1. A
      v=πhr23v = \dfrac{\pi h r^2}{3}
      Correct
    2. B
      v=3πhr2v = 3\pi h r^2
    3. C
      v=πhr3v = \pi h r \over 3
    4. D
      v=πhr2v = \pi h r^2
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

We start with r = √(3v/πh) and want v alone.

Square both sides to clear the square root: r² = 3v/(πh).

Multiply both sides by πh: πh·r² = 3v.

Divide both sides by 3 to isolate v: v = πhr²/3. This is the correct subject of the formula.

A candidate who forgets to square r when clearing the square root ends up with the r without a power, giving the wrong result v = πhr/3. Another common slip is dividing by 3 instead of multiplying when moving it across, which wrongly gives v = 3πhr². A third mistake is squaring correctly but forgetting to divide by 3 at the last step, giving v = πhr². Only careful, step-by-step clearing of the square root and the fraction gives the correct formula.

    3.

When the plate area of a capacitor increases?

    1. A
      The charge stored decreases
    2. B
      The capacitance decreases
    3. C
      The capacitance remains constant
    4. D
      The capacitance increases
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

The capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor is given by C = ε₀εrA/d, where A is the area of overlap of the plates and d is the distance between them.

Since C is directly proportional to the plate area A, increasing the plate area (while the separation and dielectric stay the same) makes the capacitance increase — the plates can now store more charge for the same voltage.

Saying the capacitance decreases or stays constant ignores this direct proportionality with area. Saying the charge stored decreases is also wrong: for a fixed voltage, a bigger capacitance means the capacitor stores more charge (Q = CV), not less.

In order to electroplate spoon with silver, the arrangement of the electrolytic cell is?

    1. A
The spoon and the silver are both made cathodes, and the electrolyte is dilute tetraoxosulphate(VI) acid
    2. B
The spoon is made the cathode, the silver is made the anode, and the electrolyte is a solution of a soluble silver salt
      Correct
    3. C
The silver is made the cathode, the spoon is made the anode, and the electrolyte is a solution of copper(II) sulphate
    4. D
The spoon is made the anode, the silver is made the cathode, and the electrolyte is a solution of a soluble silver salt
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

In electroplating, the object to be plated is always made the cathode, and the metal doing the plating is made the anode. This is because in electrolysis, positive metal ions in the electrolyte migrate to and are deposited on the cathode.

To electroplate a spoon with silver: the spoon is made the cathode, a bar or plate of pure silver is made the anode, and the electrolyte is a solution containing silver ions (such as silver nitrate or silver cyanide solution). As current flows, silver atoms at the anode lose electrons and dissolve into the solution as Ag⁺ ions, which then move to the cathode (the spoon) and are reduced, depositing a coat of silver metal on it.

In genetic counseling, a man with hemoglobin formation HbAHbS is most preferred to marry a woman of?

    1. A
A woman with hemoglobin formation HbAHbS
    2. B
A woman with hemoglobin formation HbCHbC
    3. C
A woman with hemoglobin formation HbSHbS
    4. D
A woman with hemoglobin formation HbAHbA
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

Working: HbAHbS describes a man who is a sickle cell carrier (genotype AS) — he carries one normal allele (HbA) and one sickle allele (HbS), but shows no disease symptoms because HbA is dominant.

In genetic counseling, the goal of choosing a marriage partner is to avoid producing children with sickle cell disease (genotype SS), which is a serious, life-threatening condition.

Before the emergence of OAU as a regional body, Nigeria belonged to

    1. A
      the Pan-African Congress
    2. B
      the League of Nations
    3. C
      the British Commonwealth
      Correct
    4. D
      the United Nations
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

Before the emergence of OAU (Organization of African Unity, now African Union) as a regional body, Nigeria belonged to the British Commonwealth. Nigeria joined the Commonwealth in 1960 at independence and maintained this association until 1995 during military rule, rejoining in 1999.

"Rays of sun peepingthrough the cloud", the line is an example of

    1. A
      Simile
    2. B
      Alliteration
    3. C
      Metaphor
    4. D
      Personification
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

Personification attributes human qualities or actions to non-human things. 'Peeking' is an exclusively human action; applying it to sun rays gives them a human characteristic, which is personification.

    The price mechanism

    1. A
      Eliminates scarcity
    2. B
      Is controlled by government
    3. C
      Creates perfect equality
    4. D
Allocates resources through supply and demand
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

The price mechanism uses prices to signal scarcity and abundance, guiding resource allocation.

When a share with a nominal value of #50 is quoted at #70, it is being sold

    1. A
      Below its face value
    2. B
      At a premium
      Correct
    3. C
      At a discount
    4. D
      At par value
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

When a share is quoted above its nominal (face) value, it is said to be selling at a premium. Here the share's nominal value is ₦50 but it is quoted at ₦70, which is ₦20 above par — hence it is at a premium.

This is the removal of unwanted plants on the farm

    1. A
      Thinning
    2. B
      Rouging
    3. C
      Weeding
      Correct
    4. D
      Pruning
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

Weeding is the farm operation that involves the removal of unwanted plants (weeds) that compete with crops for nutrients, water, light and space on the farm. This is exactly what the question describes.

Thinning is wrong because it means removing excess seedlings of the crop itself (not unwanted plants) to give the remaining ones enough spacing to grow well.
