WAEC Agricultural Science 2021 questions and answers

  1. 1.Which of the following types of farm power does not cause pollution?
    1. A
      Human power
    2. B
      Mechanical power
    3. C
      Electrical power
      Correct
    4. D
      Animal power
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

Electrical power is correct. It is supplied from the mains or a generator, and once it is driving a farm machine it does not burn any fuel at the point of use. That is why Agricultural Science texts describe it as a neat, clean source of power that cannot contaminate farm produce — no smoke, no soot, no exhaust fumes.

  2. 2.The following factors are essential for maize production except
    1. A
      Adequate and well-distributed rainfall
    2. B
Warm temperature with plenty of sunlight
    3. C
      Fertile, well-drained soil
    4. D
      Shade from nearby tall trees
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

Maize (corn) is a sun-loving crop that carries out photosynthesis very efficiently in full light (it uses the C4 pathway). This means it needs direct, unobstructed sunlight throughout the growing season to produce strong stalks, full cobs and good grain yield.

  3. 3.In sheep production, tapeworm could be controlled by
    1. A
Drenching the sheep with an anthelmintic
      Correct
    2. B
Dipping the sheep in an acaricide solution
    3. C
Spraying the sheep pen with an insecticide
    4. D
Vaccinating the flock against the parasite
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

Tapeworm is an internal parasite (endoparasite) of sheep — it lives inside the intestine, not on the skin or coat. The correct way to control internal parasites like tapeworms, roundworms and liver flukes is to drench the animal with an anthelmintic (a dewormer). The anthelmintic is given orally and acts inside the gut to kill or paralyse the worms so they are expelled from the body. This is routinely called deworming or drenching in livestock management.

So the method that actually removes tapeworm from a sheep is drenching with an anthelmintic.

  4. 4.The botanical name of onion is
    1. A
      Allium ascalonicum
    2. B
      Allium cepa
      Correct
    3. C
      Allium porrum
    4. D
      Allium sativum
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

The onion's correct botanical name is Allium cepa. Onion belongs to the genus Allium, and its species name is cepa.

Candidates often mix this up with other bulb crops in the same genus that are studied alongside onion:

Allium sativum is garlic, not onion.
    Allium porrum is leek.
Allium ascalonicum is the shallot (sometimes called spring onion), a different crop from the common onion.

  5. 5.A plot of land devoted to the cultivation of fruit trees is called
    1. A
      Nursery
    2. B
      Garden
    3. C
      Orchard
      Correct
    4. D
      Plantation
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

Orchard is a plot of land specifically devoted to the cultivation of fruit trees, such as mango, orange, guava or cashew. Trees are usually planted in rows and spaced out to allow proper growth, light penetration and ease of management/harvesting.

  6. 6.Which of the following statement about slatted floors in livestock housing are true? They I.lessen labourrequirements II.reduce odour in pens III.hamper movement of animals
    1. A
      II and III only
    2. B
      I and II only
      Correct
    3. C
      I, II and III
    4. D
      I and III only
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

I and II only is correct.

A slatted floor is made of wooden or concrete slats with gaps between them, laid over a manure pit or channel. As the animals walk about, their dung and urine fall straight through the gaps into the pit below instead of piling up on the floor the animals stand on.

  7. 7.Yam stored in a barn should be inspected at least once a week in order to
    1. A
increase ventilation holes to lower the storage temperature
    2. B
encourage early sprouting of the tubers for use as seed yam
    3. C
remove rotten and diseased tubers before the rot spreads to healthy ones
      Correct
    4. D
reduce the moisture content inside the barn
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

Correct answer: remove rotten and diseased tubers before the rot spreads to healthy ones.

So the real purpose of the weekly check is early detection and removal of rotten/diseased tubers to protect the healthy ones.

  8. 8.In planning a farmstead, the structure which should be located on high elevation is the
    1. A
      farmhouse
      Correct
    2. B
      fish pond
    3. C
      poultry house
    4. D
      piggery
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

The farmhouse is the structure that should be sited on high elevation when planning a farmstead.

So among these structures, only the farmhouse belongs on the elevated part of the farmstead.

  9. 9.The new rock formed when limestone is subjected to great heat and pressure is
    1. A
      Marble
      Correct
    2. B
      Quartzite
    3. C
      Slate
    4. D
      Gneiss
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

Marble is correct. Limestone is a sedimentary rock made mostly of calcium carbonate. When it is subjected to great heat and pressure underground (metamorphism) without melting, its calcite crystals recrystallize into the harder, denser rock we call marble.

  10. 10.Two species of kola grown for commercial purposes in West Africa are

    4. D
      Cola acuminata and Cola verticillata
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

Cola nitida and Cola acuminata are the two species of kola grown for commercial purposes in West Africa, especially in Nigeria and Ghana.
