UNILAG post-UTME past questions

Ten questions from our UNILAG post-UTME bank, with answers and explanations.

  1. 1.The process in which the food we eat is broken down into substance that can be used by the body is called:
    1. A
      Assimilation
    2. B
      Digestion
      Correct
    3. C
      Absorption
    4. D
      Egestion
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: B

Digestion is correct. Digestion is defined as the breakdown of large, complex, insoluble food substances into smaller, simple, soluble substances that the body's cells can use. The stem's wording — "broken down into substance that can be used by the body" — is the standard definition of digestion.

The other options describe different, later stages of food processing and are common mix-ups:

Absorption is the stage after digestion, where the already-broken-down nutrients pass through the wall of the small intestine into the bloodstream or lymph — nothing is being "broken down" at that stage, it is being taken in.

  2. 2.After the following sentence, a list of possible interpretations of all or part of the sentence is given. Choose the interpretation that you considered appropriate for the sentence. Mary's classmates agreed to send her to Coventry.
    1. A
ignore and refuse to associate with her
      Correct
    2. B
      report her to the teacher
    3. C
send her away to a different school
    4. D
      elect her as class leader
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: A

The idiom "send to Coventry" means to deliberately ostracize someone by refusing to associate with or speak to them.
  3. 3.Policy analysis, policy implementation and plan setting are some of the functions of:
    1. A
      The Legislature
    2. B
      Political parties
    3. C
      The Civil Service
      Correct
    4. D
      The Judiciary
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: C

The Civil Service (bureaucracy) is correct. In Government/Public Administration, the civil service is the permanent machinery that works out how government decisions become reality: it studies problems and weighs options (policy analysis), carries out the programmes ministries and the executive have approved (policy implementation), and draws up the sectoral and development plans (plan setting) that guide spending and projects.

So a candidate who mixes up "making the law" (Legislature) or "forming government" (political parties) with "running the administration" (Civil Service) ends up picking the wrong option.

  4. 4.The Nigerian national flag was designed by
    1. A
      Alvan Ikoku
    2. B
      Benedict Odiase
    3. C
      Anthony Enahoro
    4. D
      Taiwo Akinkunmi
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

The Nigerian national flag was designed by Taiwo Akinkunmi, a 23-year-old Nigerian student studying in London at the time. His design was chosen from thousands of entries submitted in a national competition held ahead of Nigeria's independence, and the flag (with its two green bands and white centre) was officially adopted on 1 October 1960.

  5. 5.Which of the following is not a source of local government revenue?
    1. A
      Tenement rates
    2. B
Statutory allocation from the Federation Account
    3. C
      Market and trading licence fees
    4. D
      Company income tax
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

Company income tax is not a source of local government revenue in Nigeria. It is a federal tax, assessed and collected by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on the profits of registered companies, and the proceeds go into federal government coffers, not directly to local councils.

  6. 6.Before the 1976 local government reforms, one of the defective features of the local governments in Nigeria was that:
    1. A
Local governments had clearly defined, uniform functions that could not be altered by the regions
    2. B
Local government chairmen and councillors were popularly elected by the people in every region
    3. C
Local governments received a fixed statutory allocation paid directly from the Federation Account
    4. D
There was no uniform system, as each region ran its own distinct structure and nomenclature
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

Working: Before the 1976 Local Government Reform, local government was entirely a regional (later state) affair, not a recognised third tier of government. Each region built its own system to suit its own politics: the Native Authority system in the North (dominated by emirs and traditional rulers), a different council structure in the West, and yet another in the East. There was no common structure, no common name for the councils, and no common set of powers from one region to another — this lack of uniformity, on top of weak funding and poor staffing, was one of the core defects the 1976 reform was designed to fix.

      Obafemi Awolowo
    4. D
      Anthony Enahoro
      Correct
    Show answerHide answer

    Answer: D

Anthony Enahoro is correct. On 31 March 1953, Chief Anthony Enahoro, an Action Group member representing Ishan Division in the Federal House of Representatives, moved the motion that "this House accepts as a primary political objective the attainment of self-government for Nigeria in 1956."
